Simplify Sign from Old Drawer

Salvage a drawer front to a Simplify Sign!

This was a fake drawer, at the top, right under the kitchen sink. You know, the long one that doesn't really open. When we were redoing our kitchen, I saved all the wood I could for future projects and this is one of the easy ones.

I simply took the drawer front and put on one coat of flat, black paint from the Walmart paint section. The kind you have to paint on with a brush.

Next, after drying, I took a large "Simplify" sign and stenciled it on using some yellow stencil paint from the Heritage Brand collection. I love that stencil paint, but it is a little greasy based and needs time to dry. Probably about 24 hours.

And after letting it sit to dry, I also took some of the yellow stencil paint and touched around all of the edges to make a little more "worn" looking effect.

And here it is all finished. All I need to add is a sawtooth hanger on the back.

DIY Primitive Rolling Pin Holder

I've been making a few wood crafts lately. Well, trying to. And here's my latest one. 

It's a rolling pin holder. 

I had an idea for it when flipping through a magazine and saw a similar one. But that one had a heck of a price tag. And I immediately thought, "I wander if I could make that?"

So I just looked at the pic, which is actually quite different, but has the basic same "bone structure." Then I drew out a sketch directly onto the wood for the first side, (that holds the pins.) Then I cut it out with my band saw thing. 

Make sure to lay the pin in the grooves to get a good deep sitting that will fit before you finish!

 Then it was easy to just lay that piece directly on top of the other side and trace it, so that they would be the exact same. Then I just played with different sizes of wood for the top until I got it looking how I wanted it.

I used finishing type nails to construct it, so that they weren't be that visible. Then I painted it a basic black and added a cute stenciled saying, "Primitives, Blessings from our past."

I priced this for $24.99 in my Peddlers Mall booth, but then I brought it back home the following day. I didn't want to part with it. lol. I now am using it to hold my "Vintage" styled rolling pins.

Cheap Craft Show Display Cabinet

Since I sell many little items and crafts in my Booth #555 at the Peddlers Mall, I am always in need of more shelving. And the other night at a local auction, I won this little white night stand for only $5.

Sure it needs some work, (has a top drawer missing!) but for $5 I knew I could do something with it. It's real wood, so it's sturdy. Something you don't hardly find now a days. lol.

I took one can of Walmart brand black spray paint to it.

Then just roughly sanded all the edges after it dried. I liked it like that so I left it. And where the top drawer was missing, I just stapled in a strip of black and white fabric.

I got the idea to use some pine boards because we are currently remaking our kitchen and I just laid a piece on the top of the nightstand, and liked it. So it just went from there. And believe me, I do not do exact cuts and measurements. I'm bad with that stuff, but this one still turned out good. The pine boards are really easy to cut with just a simple jig saw. I used a few more 1x3 pine boards (maybe for trim?) and kinda just doodled a little drawing, in the shape of a basic ladder, kinda. lol. and just cut cut cut until I got it to looking like a little shelf. That is what I am putting on top of the night stand to give it height and extra storage/display in my booth.

 

And here's what I came up with.

It's perfect to add extra height in my booth and the shelves, even though small, lets me add extra items! I love it.

And for the back. I went out into the garage, searching for something to make it a little bit more sturdy. And guess what I found. I had a black bookcase sitting out there holding on VHS Disney tapes. Lol. So I turned it around and removed half of the backing from that. Since it's not holding nothing great, I won't really care if it has a back or not. And I cut the cardboard type backing with regular scissors. That stuff is very thin! But it worked great!

Hope you got some inspiration from this and can maybe turn an old broken piece of furniture into something useful in your home or your craft booth!

PRIMITIVE CHECKERBOARD from old Cabinet Door

 PRIMITIVE CHECKERBOARD

This is a solid oak cabinet door that I made into a checkerboard with a saw tooth hanger on the back. 

I painted it in a flat Black and used Delta Stencil paints for the checkerboard.

I chose the Heritage color themes of the ones they sell. And the yellow color is called EGGNOG YELLOW. 

 I use a makeup sponge to stencil with all of these paints. I don't like the stencil brushes and such.

They just look so prim.

 O' how I love these two colors together. They are my absolute favorite. And that's why I do so many items in these colors. I also like red and black for the old time feel as well.

After stenciling on the checkerboard that I bought from ebay, I used a makeup sponge and touched up the edges of the board also. Just to give it a more worn look.

TOBACCO STICK STAR | DOOR WREATH

Here is my Tobacco Stick Star

I used some of the old tobacco sticks I had laying around.
 I had my husband nail them with a nail gun in the shape of stars.  

The basic star pattern, laid out on the ground. 

Here they are in full size, laid out. For this door star I had to cut the full size sticks down.

For decoration, I added a handmade bow and glued on some gold beads and here you have it.

But after looking at it with the beads, I really prefer it plain with some homespun ribbon instead of the fancy, gold bow.

Here are a few more tobacco stick stars that I made without anything fancy:

I just dry brushed on some red paint to the edges and added a grapevine wreath to the center

This is one plain before I did any painting or decorations. I sell them like this also. They are great hanging on barns and sheds.

Here is a larger tobacco stick star that I had him nail together so I could stick it around behind my flowers for interest. 

For those of you that don't know what a tobacco stick is. It is actual sticks that are sharpened to a point on each end. 

They were used when growing fields of tobacco. 
And after the cutting of the tobacco in the fields, the sticks (along with spears on the ends) would be shoved through the stalks of the tobacco, one by one, until the sticks were full of tobacco, and then that is how the tobacco was hung in the barns to cure.

Anyways, I cut the ends of each stick (because they are pretty long) and shortened them to make a small enough star for my door. 

Primitive Easter Eggs

I am in the crafting mood! lol. Seems like I just can't get enough crafts done this week. Today, I made some more Primitive Easter Eggs for my local craft booth.

If you'd like to make some adorable Easter eggs in the prim style, here's how I done it.

I started out with some plain, brownish crafting eggs. 

They look like this and I buy them in bulk packages of 40.

Then, I paint on a first coat in an acrylic color. Then on a few, I dry brushed on a few streaks of another color, to give it a more prim look. I stick with base colors such as greens, browns and reds.
  
Then, to add a country look. I load a toothbrush with some off white and fling little dots of color all over some. This was a great tip I still recall from my high school art teacher!

Next I draw on my sayings consisting of, "fresh eggs, free range, 5 cents, ect." Or I will stencil on some stars using my Delta stencil paint. And then let all that dry.

And finally, all that is left to do is match them up in sets of two, package them in a cello bag and tie them off with a bit of homespun fabric.

And wa~la. Here's some cute Primitive Easter Eggs ready to go into my craft booth at the Peddlers Mall.

SNOWMAN LANTERN

I took the globe out of this old red lantern and carefully painted it with a primitive snowman holding an old crow on his arm branch.

Then painted a little "believe" sign and attached it.

At the top I free handed on the saying, "Old Crow Wishes."

ZEBRA ROOM IDEAS

 

Hey ya'll!

My Booth #555 at Peddlers Mall has also kept me swamped. Things are selling pretty good and fast and I'm having trouble keeping it stocked up and looking good. Hectic isn't enough to describe the past month. lol.

So without anything else getting in my way, right now, lol, I'd like to share a previous craft.

Here's the before of a coat hanger that I had painted a while back, in the navy and prim yellow:

And so, after it sit for sale for a few months without anyone wanting it, I decided to give it a makeover. With the new hot style of zebra going around, I thought that's what I'd do. I'd make it into a zebra themed coat hanger so that someone may want it for their bedroom? Who knows... It could hold scarfs, hats, coats or whatever and still look cute.

Thankfully, the zebra theme helped it sell finally. I'm not sure why the stars theme didn't sell though. But either way, glad someone is enjoying it!

I've recently been obsessed with zebra myself and here's a few ways I've incorporated it around my house.

This is the tanning room, just a spare bedroom we had. I do still have a tanning bed but we mainly do spray tans now. It's just hard to get use to.  Anyways, the big tanning bed is still in there and there's not much decorating you can do with that big hunk of bulk.

The room before was plain, with stark white walls, as it had been since we re-done this entire house about three years ago. And it had just kinda sat empty ever since.It was super plain. Nothing in there.

Well, my sister Amber, had the idea to make the room a zebra theme! And we went from there.

 I just love how it turned out. Here’s some pics:
